there is fear that talking about it makes it worse?.that you are not allowed to talk about it?.it’s hard to communicate about the experience?.
SCUBA HAND SIGNALS HOW TO
I knew this because I’ve studied diver panic for years, and never considered using a sign for it! The moment I heard the idea, it instantly connected with what we know about psychological stress underwater and, how to address it.Īnother reason this idea this idea resonated so heavily was the realisation that there is no universal dive signal for panic: what does it mean when something that people experience does not have a word/sign?

The idea taps into so many things we know about anxiety, panic and how to avoid it. An option to avoid the diver heading into that cycle.Ī signal for panic, a powerful idea – and it works!

A sign to communicate about feeling stressed, … before the diver panics. Remember this is a Zoom call, at that moment it felt like a wave came through the screen. One of the students, a diving instructor, after listening to these accounts she thoughtfully asked, “how can I help my divers / students with this, to prevent the problems?”Īfter a moment or two one of the students, a PADI Advanced Open Water diver, suggested trying what she does with her buddy: “when I start to feel panicky, I give my buddy the signal we use for that” On this occasion quite a few of the divers were talking about these sort of experiences. Experiences of stressful dives, or panic are not that unusual, but it’s still not talked about a lot. Towards the end of the classroom session we look at diver stress and how panic develops. This course was no different, and one of the ideas hit with such force, it has to be shared. The course encourages sharing of experiences, fascinating discussions and inspiration. Yesterday I was teaching PADI Psychological Diver, on a Zoom call, with six divers from around the world.
